Principal's Message

Dear Members of the St Joseph’s College Family,

Farewell Year 12 2025

School life has a way of constantly reminding you that everything changes.

Yesterday, we held our Farewell Assembly for Year 12 2025, where our Year 12 students walked onto the Doyle Centre stage, and each was recognised individually, receiving a personal message from their family or teachers.  It was amazing to see these 105 students step up into this moment, and it is always with a slight sense of loss, in amongst the joy to celebrate this milestone, to see them set to leave our school.

These farewell assemblies for Year 12 are often quite emotional as we all recognise that their time with us is coming to an end, and while we celebrate that another year group has successfully navigated their way through their high school years, there is that final realisation that the world as we know it is just about to change again.  In reflecting on their achievements in their final year of high school, we see bright futures ahead for all.

And here I would like to acknowledge our Year 12 group.  This is the end of a very important chapter of your lives, with the page about to turn that carries each of you into the next chapter.  We hope you will remember that you will always be a part of this school community; we will always be interested to hear of where these as-yet unwritten pages will take you.  Just as you looked forward to finishing high school, we celebrate the opportunities that are about to open up for you.

Each step you now take will also take you away from here, so I ask you to remember all the lessons learnt - in and out of the classroom - in your time here, as these will be the foundation of your future learnings.  I hope you learn to nurture within yourself a lifelong love of learning, as your teachers tried to nurture your curiosity about the world.

I thank all those students who took on a leadership role during their time at the College and acknowledge their contribution and dedication to the school in seeking out these opportunities.  To all those who assisted in other ways, I commend you on your school spirit and thank you for your service to others.

May you all enjoy, celebrate, cheer yourself on for having come so far, for achieving all you have already accomplished - and I add a thank you to you all for appropriately and respectfully finishing your schooling with us this week.

I’m also most grateful for the support of all staff in giving this year group a most wonderful send-off, culminating with their Graduation Mass last night and, of course, today’s Farewell Assembly which saw our Class of 2025 leaving the College cheered on with a Guard of Honour by the whole school.  So much work has been done by staff across the College to bring together all these lasts for them.  Now their focus is on the HSC exams, for those sitting them, and then onto their very last ‘last’ school event, the Graduation Formal in November.

I sincerely thank you for all that you have done this year to provide our Senior 2025 group with an honourable, respectful and enjoyable finale to their schooling years at St Joseph’s College.  From the staff-hosted Year 12 Breakfast to the Farewell Ceremony, from the Outreach Day and Graduation Mass to the AWC goodbyes, from the end of formal lessons to the look back on all the achievements along the way, it's been an emotional time as this latest season comes to a close.  My thanks to you all.  We continue to keep in our prayers and thoughts the Class of 2025.

To their parents, carers and families, I thank you for your generous support for all that we do at the College.  The high school years would be all that much poorer for our students - your children - without us all working together in partnership.  We thank you for all you have done and continue to do for your children.

Here is a list of awards presented to our Year 12 group yesterday at their Farewell Assembly.

As we bid farewell to the Class of 2025, may their books be filled with stories of determination, courage, care, understanding and, of course, love, building on all they have learned here at St Joseph’s College, bookmarked with the College Prayer.

May you always find Sincerity in your endeavours, Humility in our achievements, Courage in your convictions, Wisdom in your decisions and the Peace that is achieved through just action.

Here is the list of awards presented at the 2025 Year 12 Farewell Assembly.

Student Leadership 2025-2026

On Friday 5 September, I was very pleased to announce the Student Leaders for 2025-2026, following which we held our Leadership Liturgy on Tuesday 9 September.  It was with pride that we witnessed our outgoing SRC officially handing over the school and house flags to the students of the incoming SRC.

Starting in their new roles from the beginning of next term, these leaders will represent all our students across a number of different roles over the coming twelve months.

Heading up the student leadership group, the new College Captains and College Vice-Captains certainly seem to be a team who are up to the task.  I feel confident that each of them is grounded in our core values of sincerity, humility, courage and wisdom, and that these young leaders will be instrumental in shaping the culture within St Joseph’s College in 2025-2026.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank each and every one of the nominees for their dedication and commitment to the College, and for their willingness to represent their peers by seeking out a student leadership role.  It is our hope that all students develop leadership skills and we encourage all students to engage in other opportunities for leadership throughout their time at SJC.

To the College Captains and Vice Captains: Yours will be a role of service, care, responsibility and loyalty.  To the Senior Student Leaders (Senior ISRC and House Captains): Your leadership will require you to encourage the student body to be involved in the life of the school, while developing a sense of camaraderie and spirit.  And to the Junior Student Leaders (Student Representatives from each of the four school houses): Yours will be a role of service and commitment and one that will enable you and the school community to grow to its fullest capacity.

Congratulations to:

I’ll take that one step further and ask all our students to remember the College prayer in its entirety, and that these words be a constant reminder to look to Saint Joseph’s example of protecting others in his care.  May each College student find guidance in their daily work, continue finding ways of encouraging each other, by caring for one another, showing compassion, respect and kindness to all whom they may encounter.

Saint Joseph.  Pray for us.

Term 4 Important Dates

ALL students in Years 7 to 11 return to the College to commence Term 4 on Monday 13 October 2025 - Day 1 of the timetable.

As our next newsletter is due out in Week 3 of next term, it seems timely to draw your attention to some upcoming events during the first few weeks of Term 4:

Year 12 HSC Examinations:  Thursday 16 October to Friday 7 November 2025

We pray for our Year 12 students as they commence their final exams - the HSC - and wish them well.  Stay focussed.  You’ve worked really hard.  Keep going.  God bless!

A reminder to all students sitting an exam during the HSC examination period:  You will need to be in full school uniform whenever you are on school property, when either sitting the exam or meeting with one of your teachers.  And don’t forget to be at school at least half an hour prior to each exam.

Year 11 Work Placement:  Week 3 / Week 6

Some of our Year 11 students will be attending work placement during these coming weeks.  I would say to you all to please be mindful of instructions at your venue.  Be open and willing to learn.  And turn up prepared and on time!

Year 10 Exam Block:  Wednesday 5 November to Tuesday 11 November 2025
Years 7, 8 & 9 Exam Block:  Thursday 20 November to Tuesday 25 November 2025

We pray for our junior students as they sit these exams.  Please do not worry about sitting exams, as when you reach the senior years this will assist you as you potentially head to the HSC in the coming years.  Mr Mason has some further information relating to these two periods of exams in today’s newsletter.

Enjoy the break

As always, I am most grateful for your continued support of all that we do at the College.  It is most sincerely appreciated.

I ask that you please take the time to read through this newsletter, as you will find more important information that will help you navigate your way through to commencement of the new term (and the final term for 2025!).  By keeping up-to-date with all that is happening, it ensures that your child gets the most out of each day at school.

I hope you all enjoy the holiday break, that you have time together with your family, friends or loved ones, and that everyone returns safely to the College on Monday 13 October.

Loving Father, during this time of rest and relaxation, please repair in me whatever is weary and broken, and revive my drooping spirit.  Let this holiday be a graced time of recollection and rejuvenation, of deeper self-awareness and eager self-giving.  May it be an occasion of refreshment and reinvigoration, a time to reclaim my friendship with Jesus Christ who is Lord now and forever. (Fr Peter Cameron)

Saint Joseph.  Pray for us.

God Bless

Mr Ryan Campbell

Principal's Notes

Leaving St Joseph’s College

During the second semester of a school year, families tend to make decisions about moving to a new area because of employment changes, etc.

We ask that all parents/carers of students who will not be returning to St Joseph’s College in 2025, to either send in a letter, or to email the College (sjcbanora@lism.catholic.edu.au), confirming when the student will be leaving and the new school or institution they will be attending.

All students who leave St Joseph’s College are required to complete a Clearance Form which includes the return of all College library books and textbooks.

Daylight Savings Time commences on Sunday 5 October.
Don’t forget to turn your clock forward one (1) hour!  We are on Daylight Savings Time throughout Term 4, and return to Australian Eastern Standard Time, Sunday 5 April 2026.

Summer Uniform Term 4

Next term, we return to Summer Uniform requirements, which means no ties for the boys in their formal uniform.  During this holiday break, I would ask families to ensure that all uniform items are cleaned and that students return with a neat and clean uniform and a tidy appearance, which includes appropriate hair and grooming to comply with the school regulations.  It is an expectation that boys should be clean shaven on arrival each and every school day at the College, and all students should leave home and travel to the College dressed as per expectations here at the College.  Uniform or grooming concerns may result in punitive actions taken until the matter is resolved.  Parents and carers are asked to positively encourage correct uniform and grooming at all times.

For further information, the College Uniform Policy can be found on the College website.

Dear Parents and Carers of Year 7-10 students,

During Weeks 1-4 of next term, our Years 7-10 students will be completing online Progressive Achievement Tests (PATs) in Reading, Maths and Science.  These assessments provide valuable and immediate information about each student’s skills and understanding in a range of key areas.  They will give descriptions of the types of skills mastered and those still to be developed by individual students.  The tests will also show growth in student learning from their previous PATs.  This information, along with data collected and observed by classroom teachers, will assist in planning effective learning programs to meet student needs.

The students will require a fully charged laptop in order to complete these Tests.

Please feel free to contact the College if you have any questions or concerns.

Assistant Principal - Learning and Teaching

Term 3 has been a wonderful time of learning and teaching at SJC and we are particularly proud of our Year 11 and 12 students whose academic lives have all taken a significant turn over the past 10 weeks: For Year 12 students, it has been their final days of their formal secondary schooling. For Year 11, the HSC is about to begin.

This week, we celebrated the Year 12 academic achievements at graduation assembly and we are immensely proud of every student on the awards list.  Their dedication, focus and application earned their place on that list.  We are, however, equally proud of the many students who didn’t get a mention but applied themselves with equal dedication; for them, the spoils will be in their final HSC mark itself.  We do look forward to this year’s HSC results being released on December 18, when I am sure there will be many reasons to celebrate.

For students in Years 7-10, Term 3 is always a time of steady routine, to which they have applied themselves well. Their time to shine will be next term!

As always, thanks to our wonderful parents and families who have journeyed with us through the highs and lows of Term 3.  It is great to have such a thoughtful and collaborative parent body to work with.  Below are some of the key things to be aware of as we wrap up Term 3 and move into Term 4:

    HSC examinations: October 16 - November 7

The HSC examinations begin on Thursday October 16.  All HSC students can access their examination timetables through the NESA students online portal.

    Holiday HSC workshops

A number of Year 12 teachers have generously offered their time to run workshops during the holidays.  An event outlining the timetable has been shared to parents of Year 12 students.  Please give consent for your child to attend the workshops they have chosen.

    Year 11 Examinations

Year 11 end of course examinations have just wrapped up and we were very pleased with our students’ focus and application.  Year 11 will begin their HSC courses from day 1 next term.

Year 10 Examination block, November 5-11

Year 10 will sit their end of course examinations in Week 4 and 5 next term.  Whilst mid-term may seem early, it is necessary to conduct them at this time so that we can meet the NESA deadline for Year 10 grades that are used to calculate each student’s ROSA.  A study guide resource for each subject will be shared to students in Week 1 next term so students have adequate time to prepare.

Year 7-9 examination block, November 20-25

Year 7-9 will sit final examinations in Week 6 and 7 next term.  As with Year 10 exams, a study guide will be provided three weeks in advance.

Stage 4 and 5 Elective Subjects for 2026

Students in Years 8 and 9 will be notified of their offers of elective courses for 2026 in Week 1 next term.

    Indigenous Yarns

    Jingi Walla SJC community,

We are now in Gagabalingu, the Bundjalung season of the goanna, during this season the wind begins to turn to the north.  The weather begins to warm up as the goannas, snakes and other reptiles begin to wake up and move around.  Silky oak flowers begin to bloom indicating that the turtles are fat.  The north winds start to pick up and bring the migration of the snipes, curlews and other shore birds.  On the far horizon of the ocean whales and their young can been seen making their way back south to their feeding grounds

In the last week of August, SJC came together to celebrate NAIDOC and our annual Ngalingah Ngurrilah – Coming Together to Celebrate.  It was an incredible week of culture, learning, and fun for our whole school community.

We kicked things off with the launch of our amazing new school artwork by local Bundjalung artist, Christine Slabb.  This piece, titled “Pillars of Life,” draws on our College values and the Gospel, symbolising sincerity, humility, courage and wisdom.  The design reflects the spirit of cooperation between parents, community, and the College, reminding us of the foundations we are all called to live by each day.  It is a reminder of our connection to Country and each other.  We are so grateful to Christine for producing this amazing artwork for our College, which we hope to use fittingly in the coming future.

Our NAIDOC celebrations then came alive with dances from the Gudjinburra Dance group, music from Bundjalung artists JK-47 and Birren Slabb, and our own St Joe’s Singers performing Inanay to celebrate our Torres Strait Islander connections.  Students had the chance to jump into all kinds of cultural workshops — from weaving, art, and spear throwing to seeded jewellery making, dance, short films, learning dance and language yarns.  We were fortunate to also be able to host some St James students for part of their day and we thank Andrew Stubbs for bringing them over to experience the day.  We thank all of our students for coming together and trying many new things.  We hope that everyone was able to experience lots of different activities and we hope to get bigger and better next year.  We would also like to thank Taliah Fuimaono from the Gold Coast Titans NRLW for coming along and having a yarn to the staff and students.

The final event of the day is one of our favourite traditions — the NAIDOC Touch Footy Match, SJC All Stars vs Indigenous All Stars.  After a fast-paced game, the SJC All Stars came away with the win, with the real highlight being the deadly skills and spirit shown by everyone who played.  We applaud our players of the match Billy DeGorgio (SJC Allstars) and Tianah Lea-Johnson (SJC Allstars) who showed leadership, skill and great sportsmanship during the game.

To finish off the week we also judged our inaugural AWC Deadly Doors competition, we had many amazing designs from many talented students and we congratulate our winner Hoade 6 who took the win with majority votes and won their homeroom a class party and house points.  So Deadly!  We look forward to holding this again next year.

    SJC SRC

We would like to congratulate the following students who will be a strong voice and guide in the SJC SRC for 2026.  It makes us very proud to see our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students represent so strongly in leadership, Congratulations to the following students!!

    • Jordan Parry – Senior ISRC Leader (Year 12)
    • Darcy Busbridge – SRC Representative for Hanly (Year 11)
    • Dakina-Veila Penola – SRC Representative for Hoade (Year 10)
    • Tilakini Gibbons – Junior ISRC Leader (Year 9)
    • Georgie Busbridge – SRC Representative for Hanly (Year 8)

We are incredibly grateful of these students for putting themselves forward to be leaders, and we can’t wait to see the passion, commitment, and fresh ideas they bring to their roles.  Good luck!!

    2025 Marist Fathers Grant

A reminder for families who are receiving the Marist Fathers Grant this year please refer to the email received earlier in the year from Ella Robinson for you to upload information and receipts before the end of Term.

    Congratulations Year 12 2025

Finally we would like to say a huge congratulations to all of our Year 12 students on finishing thirteen years of schooling, especially Ajileen, Kye, Sierra, Chloe and Vrndi.  We are so proud of the effort, determination and resilience that they have shown throughout not only the year but also throughout their time here at Joeys.  With HSC exams coming up, we wish them well and encourage all of them to stay focused, maintain a balanced study routine, and do your best.  Thank you for allowing us to be a part of your education journey, and Good luck and blessings for the future.

We wish all families a wonderful break blessed with fun and relaxation. We can’t wait to see you all back in Term 4 and Thank you! Bugalwan

    Year 10 Coastal Geography Fieldwork  - 12 September 2025

On 12 September, Year 10 students embarked on a wonderful excursion through local areas like Fingal Head, Kingscliff, and Point Danger to discover the product of both man-made and natural processes that affect our coastline.

Classes 10A, 10B, and 10C were first guided through the Fingal Head area with the help of Indigenous perspective from Mr and Mrs Busbridge, along with some SJC teachers.  The students learnt about specific dreamtime stories about Echidna Rock at Fingal and even got to taste some delicacies from the area.  Students wandered around the Littoral forest area and were informed of the current Revegetation Project that is taking place.  Fixing our local beaches and coastline has been the goal of Fingal Coastcare volunteers since late last century.  They are revegetating the area with traditional bush tucker plants like Pig Face and Moreton Bay Fig Trees as well as species native to the area.  They have done an amazing job replanting and creating pathways to ensure the area is protected from erosion as well as tourists.

The students were able to see first hand the current, devastating erosion of the Kingscliff beaches as well as the work of Tweed Shire Council along the Kingscliff foreshore which needed to be rehabilitated after catastrophic storms in 2009 and 2010.  The learning continued at Point Danger where students were able to view the amazing coastline and in particular, see the work of the TRESBP, to help fix deposition and ensure the Gold Coast beaches continue to be replenished with sand.

The day was certainly filled with lots of learning!

    Mrs Rebecca Green
Assistant Leader of Learning - HSIE

I enjoyed being able to see what we were learning about in real life; it showed us the importance of beach management strategies and how much they help to protect our coast. - Gracie

I enjoyed going around the different parts of coastline with my peers and learning about our local area. - Gillian

I enjoyed learning about the Indigenous culture at Fingal and their stories, as well as the various plants you can eat. - Jalen

The Geography excursion was fun with talks about all the different types of Coastal issues in Fingal, Kingscliff and Cudgen Creek.  I enjoyed learning about the vegetation project at Fingal, where we walked around and looked at all the different types of plants revegetated back after the sand mining. - Imogen

It was fun and I learned a lot about aboriginal plants and what I can eat and not eat.  It was very informative and I had a great time. - Elodie

I enjoyed walking around Kingscliff, especially Rowan Robinson Park because it was a really nice day.  The shade and cool breeze at the Northern side of the beach was relaxing. - Sally

I really enjoyed having the opportunity to listen to what the Busbridges shared, and I liked having the opportunity to see how erosion has affected our coastline. - Eloise

I enjoyed a more interactive day out, instead of studying in the classroom, and I learnt a lot more about the different dune levels when I could actually see them. - Chloe

It was really nice to get out of the classroom and see everything we had been studying in person, seeing real word examples helped to visualise the effect of erosion. - Luca

Our Geography fieldwork day was an engaging and hands-on experience that allowed me to see real-world examples of the coastal processes we had been learning about in class. I really enjoyed being outdoors, collecting data, and applying theory to a practical setting. - Hailey

    Run Beyond Project

Our Run Beyond Project team has been working hard over the past 12 weeks, and their commitment is really showing! Students have been consistently attending two training sessions each week, a Wednesday track session focused on speed work, and a Friday endurance run around Lake Kimberley at a controlled pace.

It has been fantastic to see their fitness and running ability improve steadily, with many students achieving goals they didn’t think possible at the beginning of the program.  Their dedication has been matched by their generosity, with the group already raising an incredible $10,783 for the Run Beyond Project charity.

We’d also like to congratulate our lucky shoe winners, who each received a pair of high-performance running shoes generously provided by On Running. A huge thank you to the Run Beyond team for this amazing support.

With just over three weeks to go until race day at the GC50, excitement is building, and we can’t wait to see all their hard work pay off!

    Open Girls Rugby League

A massive congratulations to our Open Girls Rugby League team, who recently competed at the CCC Championships in Sydney!

Facing some of the toughest competition within Catholic schools in the state, the girls put in a phenomenal effort, coming away with a strong win and a couple of incredibly close losses.  They were right in the mix for a finals spot, falling just short in a narrow 14–8 loss to the eventual champions, Newman College.  An outstanding performance that shows just how far this team has come.

This tournament was particularly special as it marked the final time many of our players would pull on the College jersey, with several team members in Year 12.  This group has built something truly special over the years, from learning the game during the challenges of COVID to now boasting multiple school representative pathway honours across the squad.  We couldn’t be prouder of their growth, leadership, and passion.  Thank you, girls, for the legacy you leave behind.

    Kings Cup Touch Football Competition

    13 Girls

On Monday, 15 September, our 13 Girls Touch team competed in the annual Kings Cup on what turned out to be a very hot and challenging day.  The girls showed determination and teamwork across a tough schedule of games.  With two players withdrawing from sickness, it was looking like a challenging day.

They started the day strongly with a 2–0 win against Team A with solid rucking from Sav Cocchini and Beth Instone and two huge chase downs from Willow Wilson.  This was followed by a 6–0 loss to Keebra Park High, one of the competition’s strongest sides.  Elle Maunder’s defense was a highlight in this game.  The team bounced back with a well-fought 2–1 victory over Team C, with Emily Gillett scoring a great run away try and Eliza Young.  Next, we went down 5–2 against Team D.  Millie Fairall was immense with her rucking and defense, while Giselle Young worked hard in defense.

With limited players left for the final match, one going down to injury, the girls dug deep in the heat but fell short in an 11–1 loss to Miami High.  Despite the result, their effort, spirit, and willingness to keep competing were outstanding.

Congratulations to all players for their resilience and teamwork throughout the day – a great effort to represent our school at the Kings Cup.  A huge thank you to Kiana McMenamin and Isabella Buttleman for their consistent refereeing for our team throughout the day.

    13 Boys

The Under 13 Boys from St Joseph’s Banora Point proudly represented the school at the Kings Cup, held at Owen Park, Southport.  The team of Mason Fluerty, Flynn Horton, Duke Mactaggart, Mason Keating, Billy De Giorgio, Bryce Coffee, Lukas Bele, Sunny Everingham, Jackson Nowotny, Lachlan Madgwick, and Kalani O'Connor showed fantastic spirit and determination throughout the day.

In a series of close and exciting matches, the boys battled hard against strong competition.  They started with a narrow 5–4 loss to Cavendish Road before holding on for two thrilling draws — 5–5 against Lindisfarne and 4–4 against All Saints.  The team then lifted, securing a 3–2 win against Kings Christian College and finishing on a high with a nail-biting 6–5 victory over Brisbane Adventist.

The boys displayed outstanding teamwork, sportsmanship, and resilience in every game, with each player contributing to the team’s success.  A big congratulations to our Under 13s for the way they represented St Joseph’s both on and off the field.

    15 Boys

On Tuesday, 16 September, attending the King’s Cup Touch Football competition — a key preparation event for many Queensland schools ahead of the QLD All Schools tournament — proved to be a valuable learning experience for our Boys team.

Our opening match against Yarrabilba State School immediately tested the boys’ line defence, with Yarrabilba scoring six quick tries.  To their credit, the boys responded well, adapting to the higher level of competition and slowing their opponent’s attack.  With determined rucking and sharper execution, the team fought back to put points on the board, finishing with a 9–5 loss.

Next up was St Andrew’s LC, where the team’s improved line defense proved the difference, securing a hard-fought 4–3 victory.

The clash with Southport SHS was an entertaining contest, with both sides showcasing skilful tries.  Our ability to create space through slick ball movement and line scoops kept the game close, but a late try just before the siren saw us edged out 6–5.

In the final game against King’s Christian College, fatigue began to set in.  King’s strong defensive structures forced us to adapt once again, but some clever footwork and resilience from our boys kept the contest alive, ending in a 7–4 loss.

Overall, the boys should be extremely proud of their efforts.  Their positive attitude, willingness to adapt, and hard work throughout the day led to significant growth in their touch football ability.  This experience has set a strong foundation, and the team is determined to return even stronger next year.

    Northern Diocesan Touch

    15 Girls

On Tuesday, 9th September, our Girls 15s Touch Football team travelled to compete in the Northern Diocesan Touch Football competition.  The day was filled with fast-paced matches and strong displays of teamwork.

The team opened with a tough 3–1 loss to McAuley before bouncing back with a hard-fought 2–1 victory over Trinity.  They then faced eventual champions Xavier, holding their own in defence but going down 2–0. Against Woodlawn, the girls pushed their opponents to the limit in a close 3–2 game, and they wrapped up the day with another nail-biter, narrowly losing 4–3 to MSPC.

Despite the challenging results, the girls played with determination and spirit in every match.  A standout on the day was Ivy Nasorowale, who delivered outstanding play, showing great speed, skill, and consistency across all games.  With the majority of the team consisting of Year 7 girls and two year 8 girls we look to 2026 with excitement.

Congratulations to all players on representing the school with pride and giving their best in every contest.

    Mr Joshua McCormack

    15 Boys

The boys started the day against host team McCauley College and went down in a tough game 5-0.  They then had a tight loss to Trinity 5-4 before getting a bit of a lesson in touch from Xavier College.  Another tight loss to Woodlawn saw the team fall out of contention before rallying and having a draw with arch rivals Mt St Pats which probably should have been a win if not for a very unlucky no try decision late in the game.  Overall the boys competed well with most of the team made up of year 7 students competing against year 9 students who were much bigger and far more physical, so it was promising looking forwards to the future.

    Mr James Everingham

    Open Girls

The Open girls were in for a huge day, with most of the team being in year 9, and one year 8, playing against seniors all day. They showed courage and skill winning their opening game against McAuley 5-4. They then continued their hot streak with a win over Trinity and Xavier.  However, fatigue started to set in and they lost in close games to Woodlawn and MSPC.  Overall this placed them 2nd on the day.  It was a massive effort by all but honorable mentions must go to Isabelle Buttelman, Tianah Johnson, Peyton Farr and Jayda Lammon who were instrumental in setting up skilful plays and scoring.

    Ms Hannah Toohey

    Open Boys

The Open Boys team, made up of Year 9 and 10 students, competed exceptionally well throughout the day. Their first match was against McCauley College, who were expected to be the toughest opponents of the competition. Despite facing experienced players and having a few first-time touch participants, the boys’ defensive communication was outstanding, going down 3 tries to 0.

In their second game against Trinity, the boys showed great determination in a fiery contest. The match ended in a 3–3 draw, but with Trinity scoring first, the result was awarded to them. The team bounced back strongly against Xavier College, finding their rhythm and securing a 4–3 victory.

Momentum continued into the next game against Woodlawn, where some excellent line plays led to a dominant 9–2 win. Their final match was against MSP, where powerful rucking and consistent pressure set the tone for another strong performance, finishing with a 5–2 victory.

Overall, the boys’ self-belief and teamwork grew throughout the day. Competing in a higher division and in their first touch competition of the year, they should be incredibly proud of their efforts and development.

    Mr Jordan Attenborough-Doyle

    Netball News

This term we have been training to get ready for Diocesan Netball and the progressive competition, the NSW Netball Cup.  On Tuesday August 19, eight SJC Netball teams competed at Arkinstall Park in Tweed, for the Diocesan Netball competition. The results are as follows:

    7/8 Girls White - 4th
    7/8 Girls Maroon - 10th
    9/10 Girls White - 5th
    9/10 Girls Maroon - 9th
    Senior Girls - 2nd
    Senior Boys - 4th

The NSW Netball Cup followed two weeks later, a progressive competition we were hopeful of success going into.  On Tuesday September 2, five teams played at Arkinstall Park against other local school teams such as Lindisfarne, Banora Point, Tweed River and Kingscliff Highschool.  Whilst we had two strong 7/8 girl teams and a 9/10 girls team, we were missing some students with other sporting commitments and the competition proved even stronger.  We were unsuccessful in progressing to the next round.  The boys teams (one 7/8 and one 9/10) however, were unstoppable.  Winning their respective pools they progressed to the regional finals.  The regional finals were held in Lismore on September 18.  It was a big day with fierce competition showing a high level of teamwork and skills.  The 7/8 boys team played in a pool competition and unfortunately lost their last game to place 2nd, just missing the chance to progress to Sydney.  The 9/10 boys played hard but just missed the chance to play off in the finals, placing 3rd overall.  A tough result but we’re confident the boys can get the job done next year as both teams were young for their teams division.

All teams should be super proud of how they have trained and played over the course of the term.  A huge thank you to all coaches and umpires who continue to contribute their time for a game we all love.

    Until next year.

    Ms Hannah Toohey

Let's make this a great and sun-safe term!

    Sports Academy

We have had a super busy finish to Term 3 as we farewell our three senior girls - Summer Barton, Claire Cropp and Lily Blundell.  These three girls have been nothing short of amazing with their leadership and mentoring of the younger students.  They are the epitome of our pillars Ownership, Example, Belonging and we wish them all the best in their future endeavours and also sporting endeavours.

A big congrats to Marli who won dual gold medals at CCC Athletics, and Kiara who came back from a solid shoulder injury to win bronze in the shot put.

Duke was Best and Fairest for the U13s Tweed Coast Raiders, Annika was awarded player of the match as captain for the Bilambil Jets in their winning grand final and Elodie and Eve were victorious in the Gold Coast U18s Hockey (coached by Carlo!).

Term 3 also saw applications and testing for prospective 2026 students who are currently enrolled in the school, with 48 students applying for a coveted position in our academy.  The new students for 2026 have been notified in writing of their success and we look forward to welcoming them next year.

Mitch has been guiding and driving the students through the busy end of the winter season with speed and agility as well as in the gym using our new Lumin program.  We have also engaged in some fun boxing sessions and some hand eye coordination activities to sharpen our skills.

Our final challenge for the term was our gym challenge with the senior girls as the captains.  It was highly competitive with everyone contributing to a cardio race, bench press, squats, wall balls and sled races.  It was great to get all our Sports Academy kids back together for one final hit out for the term.

Our end of year event with the whole group was an on site ‘Survivor/Amazing Race Challenge’.

The students were broken into five groups and completed a range of activities with a champion group announced.  Students had to relay race, problem size, riddle challenge, dodgeball variation, quoits challenge, slingshot event, pyramid making and many more.  It was a great afternoon and the students were amazing.

Term 3 has seen many new records in the gym with a focus on our weights and technique.  Term 4 will see a focus on cardio vascular endurance and our running.

Have a great holiday, rest up and return ready for Term 4's events.
